July 2011

This is the time when Madison really shines. Summer, when the sun shines warm and bright, makes Madison come alive with joy. Yes, it’s beautiful in the winter blanketed in crisp, white snow or glistening with sparkles of ice. The brilliant colors of fall are dazzling, but the joy, the warmth, the openness of Madison is unsurpassed in summer.

Come and join us on the JSS sponsored tour of Wollersheim Winery, complete with wine tasting, a delicious luncheon in a beautiful setting, and good people. Plan to partake in the brand new Klez Kamp that is being put together with the one and only Henry Sapoznik, who has transplanted his unique invention from New York to Madison! Of course, Klez Kamp, sponsored by Jewish Studies, will include spirited klezmer music, lessons in tradition and language along with much more. In the very same week, there is also the Center for Jewish Studies Greenfield Institute which will be highlighting Yiddish too. While Tevye, the Dairyman, sang about “Tradition” in Anatevka, you’ll find it alive and well in Madison, A Madison tradition is to find time to sit on the Union Terrace and enjoy some ice cream made right on the UW campus.

If the time you find to linger is in the evening, you may even enjoy a free concert. Speaking of free concerts, remember there is a plethora of them throughout the summer, including Concerts on the Square, Opera in the Park, Monona Terrace, musicians at the Farmer’s Market, and much more.

Many of these events include food and if that’s what draws you, don’t forget the Annual Barbeque with kosher hot dogs and hamburgers that JSS sponsors at the Goodman Campus. Being Madison, the barbeque also includes veggie options. In short, this is a time to rejoice, relax, and replenish.

Look forward to doing it with like minded people and it will be even better.

B’Shalom,

Francie
