Are you Connected to the Local Music Community? We are looking for someone to help a young émigré musician find gigs in the area. He plays classic, jazz and folk music and before arriving in the US performed with a regional philharmonia. He would like play at clubs, concerts, parties and other events.
Friendly Visitors develop an on-going, one-to-one relationship that helps to provide a sense of community, security and belonging. You'll brighten someone's day and enjoy getting to know another person. Here's one example of one of several people who would like a Friendly Visitor.
Are you ready for a special and rewarding volunteer placement?
There are a number of elderly women and a few men who would like a Friendly Visitor. Some live at Capitol Lakes downtown, some at Oakwood West, some at Attic Angel Place. Here is a sampling:

One of these women is a delightful senior, with a passionate interest in civil rights, social justice and Asian art. She lives downtown and is not content to sit around; she loves to go to exhibits, concerts, lectures or anything else that piques her cultural curiosity. All her past volunteers have enjoyed the company of this remarkable woman. The placement involves driving the client (see the "Driver Connection" below) and you should able to put her walker in the car.
- An elderly woman on the west side, who has a background in music and loves cats, is homebound and in need of company.
Bikur Holim volunteers visit people who are in the hospital, a nursing home, or in their own home, recovering or in the midst of a chronic illness. These visits often have meaning well beyond what the volunteer can imagine, as people then feel that they have not been forgotten.

Computer Assistance

A disabled woman needs regular help with data entry, in her home on the west side, approximately one-two hours a week. She needs to keep track of her expenses in order to maintain some of her benefits.
A la Carte Volunteer Opportunities
OddJobbers help seniors and people with disabilities with small, one-time tasks in their homes, such as programming something, setting up an answering machine, reaching something up high, potting plants, winterizing windows and the like. People are enormously appreciative!
The Driver Connection provides rides to appointments and community events. Driver Connection volunteers provide a copy of their license and proof of insurance, and a driver's record check is done at our expense. Some volunteers drive on an as-needed basis, others have a regular assignment..
